CHAPTER 11

ONCE AGAIN, IT was like coming home as we approached Vee. Now late afternoon, the car park was at its peak with vehicles jammed in as tightly as possible. An endless stream of people drove around in circles, waiting to pounce when a space became available.

As I opened up, a man in an eighties matt black VW campervan pulled to a stop and called out, "You leaving?"

"Give me a minute, then it's yours." I gave him a thumbs up and there was an awkward moment of silence as we each eyed the other's vehicle, the admiration clear.

He burst out laughing, so did I, and he said, "Cheers, mate. That a 67 splitty? Sweet. Original interior?"

"Nearly all original, and yes, a 67. I love the paint job of yours. How does it drive?"

"Mate, it drives like an absolute nightmare," he chuckled. "Dodgy suspension, although the brakes are good, the steering is heavy, she veers like a drunken teen with a free bottle of vodka, and the damn vents pump out nothing but hot air. They're basically just holes."

"And you love it, right?" I said knowingly.

"More than any vehicle I have ever owned. Hey, you a lifer?" Like me, he had long brown hair, but unlike me he was stocky and just had stubble. Crow's feet around his brown eyes indicated this man liked to laugh.

"Vanlifer full time," I confirmed. "It's only been a few months, but it's been a revelation. I love it."

"Been over a year for me. Stick with it. The rewards are worth it."

We turned when someone beeped, so I waved to them and apologised, then told the man, "I better get going. Nice to meet you."

"You too, mate. Maybe see you around. Thanks for the spot."

"No problem."

I hurried into Vee, buckled up, then shifted forward so he could park. I checked in my mirror that he'd managed to get the space, then exited the car park and drove the short distance to the campsite Uncle Ernie had suggested. I estimated it was less than a ten-minute walk into town, so could easily leave Vee there, but I also had plans for today that I wanted to fit in, just to have some time alone, so would drive back in once we were settled at the campsite and that way we could go straight to the party later on too.

Pulling off the main road, I bounced along a track, stopped at the farm gate, did the usual of opening and closing, then parked at reception. I could already tell that this would be a perfect location, and felt butterflies as I anticipated staying somewhere so beautiful, but not quite knowing what to expect.

This was what I truly adored about vanlife. I had both the familiar and the new everywhere I went. My home had all I needed, or at least could make do with, and I knew every square inch of it intimately, but each new place I stayed had endless things of interest and I could never tire of visiting all the country had to offer.
